THESIS

At a time when black women weren't recognized or supported for their contributions to society, Alice Walker developed Womanism in 1982. Womanism is a movement that supports the culture and beauty of black women and other Women of Color, also known as WOC. Womanism is the back bone to feminism, and is what helped to develop what we know today as intersectional feminism. The immediate impact was a movement that helped black women take a stand on their history and place in society. A thoery that would represent them as the homemakers of the black community and the developers of mainstream white American today. The long term consequences involved a deeper understanding of what it means to be a feminist, for all women, not just white women. Black women were brought into this country and were constantly raped and slaughtered and used as property by both white and black men. No one took them seriously. That is why Womanism was developed.
